'The matrix is everywhere..It is all around us. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you to the truth . . .' Morpheus The movie, The Matrix, which came to existence in 1999, was a truly revolutionary movie that would present a completely different world view compared to the other movies. In the following essay, I am going to speak about Matrix as if it was written by Feuerbach as a sequel to the Essence of Christianity. It should be note that Feuerbach based his theory of alienation on the religion claiming it to be an indispensable part of our lives (just as the Matrix). He stated that God, was created by the human brain, to have something to rule over humans, thus alienating people from them true selves. Matrix, was nothing but god for people (actually it was more than God because it would also create God and other things for those who are inside of matrix). Thus, Feuerbach, believes that the nature of alienation is purely mental and could be changed at person's will. Feuerbach also noted that one is unable to describe God in words, as one would describe a dog or a family member. One cannot make any statements about God with even the statements like "god is unknowable" being a description that does not apply to god. Feuerbach believed that the only best way to describe god is to use the description of something we know the most-i.e. ourselves. By the same token, in the "Matrix" no one would attempt to describe the Matrix to Neo until he was plugged off the matrix. Until he understood, or actually started to believe that he was the chosen one, he could not stop the bullets or fly, both in and outside the matrix. The nature of a human is purely mental and the "Matrix" does a good job showing how humans are slaves to the mental reality, while in fact being kept in the bottle-like cases so that they would power the 'god' which in turn alienates these humans from their true being by feeding their brain with images. God is seen as one of the programs (images) inside the matrix, which is one of the controls of human activity inside the matrix, so that they do not pursue anything outside the matrix. All those outside the Matrix are seen as complete atheists, with respect to the God that Matrix provides and represents. On the other hand they believe in the prophesy that there would be 'the chosen one' who would give people freedom. Once they unplug the person from the matrix, thus make sure he/she is able to think freely (rather than base his/her thoughts on some matrix-projected images) he/she indeed is the god. This belief truly coincides with Feuerbach's belief that we can know god by knowing ourselves and once we think freely we can be gods. The Matrix movie portrays a religious quest for truth, when those on the Nebuchadnezzar, who believe and appear to know the truth (which gave them the prophesy) would strife to fight the fake religion and God created by matrix. This looks like a crusade of the true believers fighting on the holy land (the inside of matrix where all people are) to promote God. At the same time everyone (Neo, Morpheus, Trinity) and others appear to be atheists because of their doubts. Being outside the matrix and having the ability to fully control one's thoughts and reality, they still have doubts about what they do, why they do it, etc. The true believe does not doubt-she/he is confident in what he/she believes. Yet the most atheistic person (or actually a program) was the fortune-teller, black woman, the name of who I do not remember. She is the one who instills the idea in Neo that one needs to believe in himself or in something else (like prophesy) in order to have a mission in life. The Matrix shows that whenever the main characters start to believe, they start to overcome the Matrix's reality and fulfill their mission. The name of the Ship, "Nebuchadnezzar", is very symbolic for it signifies one of the greatest Jewish kings who managed to conquer several large cities like Babylon and Jerusalem. The name Nebuchadnezzar was taken from the holy Bible which spoke extensively about that king who benefited the jewish nation so much despite his numerous bloody wars. Jews were considered the chosen people, with a mission to promote god among the tribes who lived in the Middle East. People of "Nebuchadnezzar" were also the chosen to actively fight against the machines for the truth. Also if I am not mistaken, from old Hebrew, Nebuchadrezzar means "tears and groans of judgment", which once again signifies the mission of the ship, i.e. to show the machines and the matrix the severity of judgment. Speaking about what side Feuerbach takes, the humans or the Matrix, I believe that it is the humans. Just like in his Essence of Christianity, where Feuerbach, presents numerous contradictions in the religion to argue that God is what alienates people keeps them from being free, and thus, God being the imaginary control of humans which they do not need, so I believe he would in his Matrix as a sequel to the Essence of Christianity, attempt to show people that it is much better to be outside the matrix eating protein food, rather than to stay in a tube, while you mind would tell you that you are enjoying a tasty turkey. Feuerbach is pro freedom and thus takes side of humans headed by Neo, who are for the mental and physical freedom of people.
