The archeologists would find early settlements on the Palatine Hill (where the modern day Rome is located) that date back to over 750 BC. The modern day celebration is called Parilia and it is believed that the rome was founding 753 BC.

There are two legends, namely of Aeneas and of Romulus and Remus. It is believed that king Numitor of Alba Longa was ousted by his brother Amulius who would then get to power. Amulius would kill Numitor sons and would make Numitor's daughter Rhea Silvia a vestal Virgin. The vestal virgins would serve the goddess vesta and would remain chaste for at least 30 years-term of service to the goddess. One should remember that Mars, the famous god of war, would seduce Rhea Silvia and would give her twins, Romulus and Remus. Rhea Silvia would be thrown into river Tiber and the river god would catch her and marry her. The twins would be placed in the reed basket and thrown in the river. Providience (goddess of providence) would save the kids by directing the basket to the river bank and the female wolf (wolves are sacred to Mars) would feed the twins with her milk until they were found by a shepherd. Another version says that the kids were fed by the shepherd's wife, a former prostitute. The reason is that the latin word "lupa" means both a female wolf and a prostitute, so it is hard to say who fed the kids.

Subsequently the boys would kill Amulius and restore Numitor to the throne. The guys would then read the omens that could be seen in the flying birds and decided to build a city on the Palatine Hill. Romulus was the one to plough the city boundaries with the while cow and while bull. Remus would make fun of Romulus, and interfere with his work. So Romulus killed his brother and continued his work. The legend goes on speaking about the city having no women and the in order to get some, they would host a festival for the neighboring tribe of Sabines. Once the tribe arrived, the romans would kill the men and get 600 of their women.

Romulus and Remus tale is more popular today than during the Roman empire that preferred the Aeneas tale. Virgil was the one to uphold that view, too.

Aeneas, was the hero who fought the Greeks during the Trojan wars. After Troy fell, he managed to escape to the place called Latium, located on the banks of the Tiber river. Aeneas would marry the daughter of King Latinus in order to prevent another king Turnus to marry her first. Turnus would then make a war to get the girl, yet Aeneas, together with King Tarchon would win. One should remember that because the Troy fell in around 1200 BC, the Romans would then create some imaginary kings that lived from the time of Troy to the time Romulus found Rome in order for this myth to work.
