ENERGY STAR(r) is an international standard that was created in the USA for energy-efficient electrical equipment in order to preserve the nature and reduce the greenhouse effect. Energy Star (r) was created by the US Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in 1992, and now is adopted around the world. Currently Energy Star (r) gets involved in numerous activities to educate people about the benefits the energy-saving equipment and about the positive effects it has on the nature around us. In simpler terms all products labeled with Energy Star (r) label use less electricity that usually results into tremendous savings in energy bills.

Speaking about different equipment we have at home or at office, like a computer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, iron, fax, printer etc., I have to note that if they are manufactured in accordance with the Energy Star (r) standard, they are likely to consume about 50% less energy, which in simpler terms equals a $36 saved per computer/year in electricity bills alone.

Speaking about the Energy Star Homes, I would like to note that the need for such environmentally friendly houses is apparent: the US households alone consume over 20% of the total energy produced in the country. In order to save the energy the US Environment Protection Authority went a step further and in 1995 developed a special code of standards that will allow the houses to save up to 30% of energy that 'regular' houses use.

The energy star (r) houses are fuel neutral, meaning that they can either be powered only by electricity or dual (electricity and gas). These new houses utilize a special material for the building envelope that comprises: floor, walls, door, windows and the roof to insure proper insulation and thus energy loss. I have to add that the heating, ventilation, water heating and air conditioning system of the houses is also modified to assure efficiency and thus smaller energy loses. The US Environment Protection Authority also encourages people to use other household products with the energy star (r) label to assure even greater energy savings. Energy Star (r) houses also use a sophisticated air ventilation system that ensures healthy air quality.

When thinking whether or not all houses should be built in accordance with the Energy Star (r) standards, it appears most likely that yes-they all should abide by the Energy Star rules. The following are the reasons why the houses should be built in accordance to the Energy Star ® standards:

1. Visually Energy Star (r) houses are not different from any other house. The better insulation, which is present in the roof, floor, doors, windows, and walls is hidden behind the design that is unique in each house.

2. All houses that are Energy Star (r) certified provided hundreds of dollars of savings in energy bills for the households-the money that could be spent elsewhere.

3. All houses that are Energy Star (r) certified have a sophisticated fresh air conditioning system which assures fresh air in the house and is not present in 'regular' houses.

4. All houses that are Energy Star (r) certified also save natural resources (electricity, fossil fuel, and gas) and contribute to lesser emissions from the power plants, thus benefiting the nation as a whole.

There basically no cons to the Energy Star (r) houses, except for a slightly higher building costs associated with the new insulation. Speaking about the ways New York should promote energy conservation, one needs to keep in mind that building all new houses in accordance to the Energy Star (r) standards is already a good start for the state that currently faces numerous pollution issues. The second step to energy conservation should certainly be the attempt to encourage the purchase of Energy Star (r) products like microwaves, computers, printers, faxes, washing machines, dishwashers, etc., let alone the products associate with water conservation (taps and shower pipes that allow less water through as normal taps and shower pipes do). The toilets that consume less water than the 'traditional 4-gallon' toilets would also contribute to the energy savings associated with the water treatment and re-processing. The final step to reduce energy consumption in New York could be a government program that would encourage people get early to bed and early to wake up, thus using more of the solar light rather than the one that comes from lamps.
